Retrial for 1961 murder case rejected

TOKYO, Japan - File photo taken in June 1961 shows Masaru Okunishi (C), accused of poisoning 17 people, resulting in the deaths of five women, on March 28, 1961, at a local community meeting in Nabari, Mie Prefecture, during the first hearing on the case at the Tsu District Court in the prefecture. The Supreme Court said Oct. 17, 2013, it has turned down a petition by Okunishi, now an 87-year-old death-row inmate, for a retrial over the case.

Comedian, singer Hitoshi Ueki dies at 80

TOKYO, Japan - Hitoshi Ueki, one of Japan's leading comedians in the 1960s, offer prayers at a wake for former Tokyo Governor Yukio Aoshima in December 2006. Ueki died of respiratory failure at a Tokyo hospital on March 27, aged 80. A native of Mie Prefecture, Ueki began his career as a member of the Crazy Cats, a comedy band led by Hana Hajime, in 1957. He hit it big in 1961 with ''Sudara Bushi'' a song whose lyrics were written by Aoshima, another comedian who later turned a Tokyo governor.

The monthly index, released Friday by the organization, best known as FAO, averaged 140.7 points in February. That is 3.9 percent higher than in January, 24.1 percent higher than in February 2021, and 2 percent above its previous all-time high set in February 2011. The index, which measures prices dating back to 1961, uses the average for prices between 2014 and 2016 as the value of 100. It is adjusted for inflation. The monthly FAO Food
